OK, so here we are today...something positive to assist the Big 3 is going to be done BEFORE the end of 2008, because it HAS to happen. Regardless of your opinions, we ALL stand to lose a great deal otherwise. That much is obvious. What is NOT as obvious is what the US Automakers have already accomplished toward this end.
Giving a "bridge loan" is not the only area that needs to be accomplished, however the 2010 UAW contract will effectively eliminate much of the "market advantage" that the Import manufacturers now hold over American Auto Makers, even the ones who build cars in the USA. Getting to that point is the problem and the real reason for the funding need today from the Government because the Capital Markets are dried up.
The CAFE rankings put GM in the lead of all car makers for the most dramatic turnaround, with Chevy at #3, a mere 10th of a gallon behind Honda !!!...& Pontiac along with Saturn are respectively ranked at 5 & 6 in the top ten...Oh, the last place of the 10....is Toyota.
GM in spite of the reduced demand for overall sales, has INCREASED the market demand for the new product recently brought out, CARS like the Malibu, G6, CTS, Enclave & others are ALL showing dramatic sales in the face of a down domestic market.
Same with FORD, the sales of the new models from them are increasing in the face of the downward demand & lack of financing, with Quality and Safety standards equal to and surpassing ALL the leading Import Car Companies across the entire lineup from each of the Big 3 auto makers in Detroit.
Chrysler is at this point almost not a concern, as it will find new partners to shore up the offerings, like the Tesla Electric car prototypes they have recently exhibited, but they ARE a niche builder with just over 1 million sales a year, they can with a little help now to align themselves with other car companies for specific "custom lines", like they have done with VW on the Rutan minivan, which is a Chrysler product sold as a VW. More of these type deals back and forth across the domestic & import markets will provide them with a nice little cash flow to profitability.
The projected domestic market is around 11 million sales in 2009, GM has a 64% ratio of import market demand to 36% domestic sales from the over 9 million manufactured each year. So if you do the math, GM has the most at risk AND the most to gain because they HAVE done the homework to "emerge" profitable by 2010 as the true recognized leader in the auto industry.
Ford has actually produced profitable quarters THIS year !!..with more new product on the road now in both domestic & import market sales...which Proves the STRATEGY of the Big 3 actually does and will work.
